Developing adaptiveness in a changing world

The greatest gift of Lean Thinking is the ability to adapt. But what strategies, practices and mindsets do we need to rely on in order to develop this fundamental trait in our organizations and become resilient?

The world is changing at an unprecedented pace. Words like “deglobalization” are being used more and more, reflecting an increasingly complex and multipolar world, in which countries are looking to “de-risk” by minimizing global interdependencies. A new Cold War seems to be setting in, weakening already compromised supply chains and forcing companies to come up with new and clever ways to move goods, while a new arms race is heralding change for many economies. At the same time, the spread of generative AI threatens to transform the labor market as we know it, with unpredictable consequences. You may think this has nothing to do with you, but make no mistake… these historic changes will impact the way your organization operates.

To thrive, businesses will need to understand the world they are in, be curious and willing to experiment, while coming up with solid long-term strategies. Leaders will have to do their part, ensuring that continuous learning permeates their organizations and that the right skills are developed.

This year’s Lean Global Connection will help you to make sense of a messy, changing world, by bringing you the stories of adaptiveness of those organizations that are leveraging creativity and lean to find their way forward.

See you on November 21 at 2PM UTC!

FAQ

Is the event free? What’s the catch?

The core mission of the Lean Global Network, which organizes and funds the Lean Global Connection, is to spread Lean Thinking and Practice around the world. We see the LGC as an integral part of this, which is why we want as many people as possible to have access to this content. Of course, donations are more than welcome. If you want, you can donate upon registering for the event.

Why do you request data when I book?

Knowing who you are, where you are from, and what company you work for helps us to build a program that is truly valuable to you. It’s also a way for us to keep in touch after the event and ensure you don’t miss important updates, like the opening of registrations for the following LGC.

The event goes on for 24 hours. Do I have to watch the whole thing?

Of course not! We understand that it’s very hard for people to follow the entire event (although every year, a few of you do). That’s why a few weeks prior to the event, we publish the agenda so you can select the sessions you don’t want to miss. After the event, we also upload all sessions to the Lean Global Network YouTube channel.

Adapting Lean for a changing world

The world is shifting rapidly, but how should Lean Thinking adapt to it? The good news is that we don’t need new inventions. Our existing principles and methods remain strong. But in a world where new challenges appear suddenly and instability reigns, we do need to speed up the clock, embracing kaikaku (dramatic change), kaizen, and daily management. Jim will explain why lean organizations should balance quick responses with a deep understanding of the situation, as Toyota’s diverse strategy with low-carbon vehicles demonstrates.

Daily Management to solve problems and develop people, every day

Daily Management is the process of aligning the organization to the strategy, defining the variables that need to be controlled and their daily targets, and creating the problem-solving system that allows for rapid and effective problem solving by engaging the people. With this approach, we are better capable to achieve the levels of performance expected and create a learning environment to generate an improvement culture. By solving problems every day in a structured and systematic way, every company can respond to the changes in the environment much more rapidly.

José and Fabio will provide some real examples of DM implementation at TechnipFMC, discussing the benefits it afforded the company.

Why automation fails: barriers to technology adoption in manufacturing

Despite significant advances in robotics and artificial intelligence over the past three decades, the adoption of these technologies in manufacturing remains the exception rather than the rule. For example, only 12% of manufacturing facilities in the United States have any robot adoption at all, and only half of those facilities report moderate or high use of robotics. What explains why manufacturing firms have had such difficulty making use of new technologies? Drawing on technology sales data, case studies, and interviews, this presentation will identify technical, workforce, and management characteristics that differentiate robot power users. It will also discuss the ways in which public policy and training programs have the potential to shape the adoption of new technologies that can drive improved productivity and higher wages.

Lean Transformation Research

Learn about the Lean Enterprise Academy's latest research on applying Lean Thinking & Practice. This practical research on lean transformations is carried out directly with many organizational leaders. It has highlighted some of the common gaps they have identified when applying Lean Thinking & Practice to their unique business problems. One of the biggest gaps was found to be around understanding how to develop leadership capability to learn and teach Lean to others through real practice. The LEA team will highlight the specific key problems and failures that organizations have on capability development, but will also show a proven example of how to help leaders develop their own skills through “learning by doing”.

Create a lean culture

As the world changes and things go faster and faster, it is imperative for companies to adapt and change the way they do things or they will not only fall behind but risk going out of business altogether. The traditional business model, with its functional structure and batch approach, not only contains significant built-in waste but is also difficult to change. Art will explain why the lean management approach is a far better way to run any type of company and why it's important to inject Lean Thinking into the company culture, to ensure sustainability of results and develop organizational resilience and competitiveness.

Thinking about Lean Thinking Part IV: Lean Thinking and Paradox Mindset

We often say, with regards to adopting Lean Thinking (whether as an individual or as an organization), that "it’s easier to act your way to a new way of thinking than to think your way to a new way of acting". But, even if you buy that basic idea, it’s also true that we DO want to change the way we think. And, if so, how DO we think now and how do we WANT to think? This session will explore one key piece of that - a paradox mindset. A paradox mindset holds that, rather than accept simple either-or choices, we want to appreciate complexities, both the macro big picture and micro level details of nuance. What implications does this hold for us as we do our work as individuals in organizations?

We, individuals and organizations, are pulled in multiple directions, faced with seemingly conflicting objectives, and opposing forces. How can we recognize and account for opposing tensions and conflicting contradictions as we make decisions large and small?

Is paradox mindset valuable for lean thinkers? If so, how? And what can we do to adopt it? In this exploratory session, John and Rachel will share their experience, their thinking, and sources they have found in the research that has led them to their tentative hypothesis that "people/organizations that can navigate the tensions to both/and thinking flourish over time”.

Optimizing operations for early breast cancer detection

The Houston Methodist Sugar Land Breast Care Center (BCC) faced long appointment lead times, which hindered early breast cancer detection and patient satisfaction. At its peak, lead times for screening mammograms extended to 75 days, frustrating both patients and physicians. The root causes included inconsistent scheduling templates, inefficient use of staff, and a lack of management systems to track demand and capacity. Utilizing lean methodology, the team implemented a phased approach aimed at fostering continuous improvement and enhancing operational efficiency. Change management played a key role in engaging the staff and driving the transformation.

Lean is traditionally associated with manufacturing and, therefore, repetitive processes. In the tech industry, this has led to the widespread belief that lean is great for the maintenance part, but does not apply to software engineering, because it is too creative to be repetitive enough. Seeing the invisible: gemba practices in financial services

Applying lean to services and offices can be a challenge: people see it as a concept only for production, not for working at a computer. In many companies, office workers are not aware of what quality and value mean in their processes, or for which value streams they work. They sometimes struggle with the concept of the internal customer. And thoughtlessly translating tools and methods from manufacturing won't work!
